Honoring Change Across Generations

Families today look very different than they did when we first began providing services 42 years ago. Increasingly, people we support who once relied on parents as primary caregivers are now supported by siblings or extended family. These second-generation caregivers balance full lives while navigating complex systems on behalf of someone they love. As families change, we are called to change alongside them.

At our employee Summit meetings, we were blessed to hear from siblings of people who choose our services. In Buffalo, one shared gratitude for the partnership he has experienced with staff members who support his brother. He reinforced that trust is built over time, when families and the staff walk together with openness and respect.

In Rochester, another sibling spoke about vulnerability through change, reminding us that when families and the staff stay engaged and transparent through imperfect outcomes, healing and growth are possible. She also reminded us that caregiving relationships naturally experience ups and downs, especially as responsibilities shift across generations.

As families continue to change, so must we, by listening closely, communicating clearly and building trust through person-centered support. The work isn’t always easy, but within that challenge is our greatest opportunity: to meet families where they are today and walk forward with them into what’s next, always in the best interest of the people we support.
